Bring attention to sexual racism through peoples thousands of unconscious biased swipes on Tinder. Ben Grant, silver winner at Young Lions.

Bring attention to sexual racism through Tinder
Racism isn’t acceptable in the workplace, on the sport field or in our schools and universities. But when it comes to dating, racism is everywhere. In online dating, where you decide in a microsecond whether you’re attracted to someone or not; all our racial prejudices come out to play. This is called sexual racism. Statistics show that white men and women are the most
messaged and matched, while Asian men and African women are the least likely to be messaged.
Relationships are the building blocks of our society. If we have prejudices about what race we find attractive, this carries over to every decision we make in our work and home lives.

Using your swipes to calculate your unconcious racism
Using a person’s tinder swipes, we match the races of who they find attractive (using AI image recognition) and create personalised reports to bring attention to their unconscious racism, prompting them to learn more on our online learning tool and through our yearly report.

Australia’s relationship with racism report:
Using the data from over 3.5 million+ Australian Tinder profiles, we’ll create a yearly report outlining demographics across the country and our unconscious bias in dating.
Unconscious racism affects every Australian, but we’ve never been able to measure its impact statistically on an Australian wide scale. In doing so, we hold up a mirror to society and help us individually learn from our actions. This report shows how every person from every race can be affected by unconscious sexual racism. We’ll ultimately measure success by the reduction of unconscious racist swipes from the 2018 report to the 2019 report.

Swipe around the world:
Inner city populations have the ability to swipe with people from all races.
But when you live in the outer suburbs and country towns, racial diversity is reduced, which can exacerbate the issue. To solve this, people who use the online learning tool are offered the opportunity to change their location on Tinder for free. This way, it doesn’t matter where you live, you can swipe with people all around the world and improve your unconscious bias.
For those who click “learn more” on the Tinder app, we provide a video platform of accessible expert lectures from around the world, to teach about unconscious racism, how it affects us every day and ways to prevent it. We also implement the “Harvard Implicit Association Test” to help people measure their unconscious bias without the need to swipe.
